Career Headlines: Bad Habits

Workplace Habits That Can Ruin A Career

"For every employee, there are a hundred people lining up to take your job," says Kiki Weingarten, an executive career coach based in New York City. "Because of the current economy, employers are able to be as picky as they want." Meghan Casserly reported in Forbes magazine what leading career coaches say can damage a career -- or get a person fired.

Habit 1: You're addicted to email and textingYou can't stop scrolling through your phone. Constantly checking your phone conveys a real sense of arrogance, says Princeton, New Jersey based communication coach Matt Eventoff. To break the habit, "put the phone down," says Eventoff. Turn it off, put it away, leave it where you can't see or hear it. If you're waiting for a particular, time-sensitive email, let your coworkers know that's why you're checking your phone.

Habit 2: You're full of excuses. You don't know the answer to your supervisor's questions, but try to talk your way around it. The result is you waste your own time, and your manager's, too. To break the habit, gather necessary papers and your thoughts before a meeting, so you don't have to make excuses." Say "I'll find the answer," when you can't respond to a question.

Habit 3: You set too many boundaries. Saying "That's not in my job description," may shorten the hours you spend on the job, but won't help your career. The problem with being self-protective is that your coworkers may think you're a jerk. To break the habit, ask yourself who will tackle an annoying task if you pass it off. Recognize that in periods of downsizing, everyone picks up extra slack. If you make yourself the exception, your career will suffer.

Create an awesome film, get a scholarship

The Davis Law Group Viral Video Scholarship Contest was created with the mission to educate the public on safe driving practices. As a result of the program’s success, we are launching the second year of the program, in hopes to create the best public announcement viral video for the 2011-2011 school year.

Last year’s winner was Gabrielle Lewis, a student at Montana State University. She chose texting and driving as her viral video topic in order to raise awareness of the repercussions of this dangerous act.

Do you know any film students or video enthusiasts that would be interested in participating in this year’s scholarship contest? A total of $3,000 will be awarded in scholarships.

Many schools and film courses have shown interest in the program and have included public service announcements into their curriculum.

Let me know if you have any questions about the program. Full details can be found at http://dlglawfirm.com/viral-video-scholarship-contest.

Get funding for your project with "Donors Choose"

Advisors: Funding Available for Your Students' Big Ideas!

Have your students been talking about creating a sign language club or a school vegetable garden? Do you want to help them execute their ideas? DonorsChoose.org has an exciting new partnership with ABC Family that will help you support and empower your high school students. This new campaign, Bright Students, Big Ideas!, provides Double Your Impact match funding to champion all student-generated projects and helps your students bring their big ideas to life!

To be considered for this funding, 9-12th grade teachers must:
Submit one or more projects for student-led initiatives that you will help execute (debate teams, recycling programs, beach clean-up efforts, you name it!).

To qualify, your project must:
Demonstrate how your student(s) initiated the project, how many students are involved, and how you're working with them to develop it.
Contain $100-$1,300 in project materials.
Include the keyword "ABC Family".
Tell us how your students will implement the project at your school, and why you're both interested in seeing it funded! If selected, your projects will appear with an ABC Family logo within one month. This means they are eligible for this Double Your Impact offer, and have a great chance of being fully funded. (How it works)

For best chance of funding, submit your project by November 7th!
